Favorites & Traditions

Happy December! We're officially in the Christmas countdown and I'm trying my best to feel as festive as possible and really enjoy the season. I love a good Christmas q&a and I thought I'd throw in some holiday photos as well since I've been trying to figure out how to better use our camera. We never remember to use it, but with a baby on the way I have a feeling we'll be taking a million photos and my phone camera is kind of the worst.

Real or fake tree: We get a real tree, but I grew up with a fake tree and eventually wouldn't mind making the switch back to an artificial tree. A pre-lit tree would be so much easier, you can put it up as early as you want, and you won't find stray needles for the next six months. At the same time I really do love picking out a real tree every year, I like how each one has its own personality and isn't exactly perfect-- and a real tree smells so good!

Favorite Christmas cookie: All of the cookies! If I had to choose a favorite it would probably be gingersnaps, rice crispy wreaths, or a classic sugar cookie!

Home or travel on Christmas morning: If we haven't traveled to see my family out of state we usually stay home and have adapted my families traditional Christmas morning breakfast my dad makes every year, and then we have a pot roast for dinner.

Clear or colored Christmas lights: We use white lights, but I really like both!

Send Christmas cards: We don't do photo cards, but I always have good intentions to send traditional cards.

Favorite gift received/gift given: I can't think of anything specific for either but I definitely love getting to watch someone open a gift you've picked out for them when it's something you put a lot of thought into.

Stockings or no stockings: I always loved going through my stocking on Christmas morning growing up. We don't have stockings now, but I think it's something we'll start next year once we have a baby.

Christmas Pajamas: Growing up we usually got Christmas pajamas to open on Christmas Eve

Favorite Christmas song: Angels We have heard on High

Favorite holiday tradition: Christmas morning breakfast-- I love that it's something we always did with my family growing up, but also something we do on our own now too.

Early shopper or last minute: Definitely a little bit of both though I prefer to get started early.

Favorite Christmas movie: Home Alone 2, White Christmas, The Holiday, Jingle All the Way... I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.

Favorite holiday beverage: I love a really decadent hot chocolate-- salted caramel or peppermint with alll of the whipped cream!

Cookies and milk for Santa: I vaguely remember doing this growing up, but I don't think we ever made it into a big deal. I think it's a fun tradition if you have little kids that believe in Santa though.

What are some of your Christmas favorites and traditions?

  1. Love your holiday tradition and we have a fake tree and have for the last 8 years, but I'd really like a real tree sometime soon and then go back to the fake ones LOL! I haven't had a single holiday cookie yet!! Need to remedy that! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  6. Congratulations!! I didn't know that you were expecting. So exciting! :) Stockings were one of my favorite things as kids. We try to do it now as adults, but it is a bit tough because I tend to spend my budget for KC before I even start thinking of stockings. :P heheh Christmas morning breakfasts are always so nice too. My mom always made a homemade breakfast pizza. :) The Holiday is one of my all-time-favorites and always will be! :) Happy Christmas season. :) XO - Alexandra

  9. I love all the Christmas movies. I was just looking at some recently that I'd never seen and now I need to find a way to watch them. LOL Netflix doesn't really seem to have that many. I think stockings are fun - I had those when I was younger.

  12. We got a fake tree the first year my son was crawling.. I cringed at him crawling though all those needed but 13 years later and I still miss the trip to the tree farm... I do not miss the needles everywhere though and I love that we can put it up whenever we want and it only takes minutes before we can start putting the ornaments up with the pre-lit tree.

  13. I agree with you that I love that each real tree is a little bit different! I think that it would be fun to pick out a tree is a family but it is so easy to just put up a fake tree! And I’m totally with you on wanting to eat all the cookies and drink all the hot chocolate! Starbucks has a wide variety of hot chocolate this year and I want to try some of them out!

  14. I loved my stocking as a kid - I remember a couple times we forgot about them in the morning and once we came back from dinner with my grandparents it was a fun surprise! I do want to start doing them for my kids soon - We hang the stockings but don't put any presents in them - But I struggle to find the right little presents that aren't just cheap knick-knacks. Also we try to stick to three presents a year (want/read/wear) and I feel like the bonus stocking stuff is over the top. Maybe I could just put one of the three presents IN the stocking. I'm probably overthinking this as usual...
Your Christmas decor is beautiful! :-) Love the penguin pillow.

  20. Salted caramel and peppermint are my favorite hot chocolates! We had a fake tree growing up, and Chris and I both prefer them now too. So much easier! I told Chris last year that I really want to get into doing stockings for each other every year with just fun thoughtful things. I hope he gets in to it with me, I already grabbed a few things for his. I just loved opening them when I was little because you never knew what creative stuff my mom would come up with!

  21. Great holiday traditions! Home Alone is also one of my favorite Christmas movies, I can watch it so many times and never get tired of it. I'm definitely a fake tree kind of girl because I don't like the mess but Alex loves real trees so we got a real tree this year. I also send Christmas cards every year to friends and family so now more people are doing it too which is nice :)

  24. I had a prelit tree the past 10 years and it is SO much easier! It finally died this year so I think we're going to do a real one this year but I can see myself going back to fake. And yes to hot chocolate!! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  25. You and me both with trying to figure out the fancy camera! I even took an online course and still can't wrap my head around all the features. Hope you figure it so you can take some adorable pics of the new bundle of joy! When is your due date? Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis

  26. My family would always have some kind of egg or hashbrown casserole for Christmas breakfast--such good memories!

  27. I love idea of choosing a Christmas tree and having that fresh pine scent in my home... Unfortunately, my allergies don't love pine trees and (the few times we had real trees when I was a kid) I spent the weeks leading up to Christmas congested as all get out! Artificial trees are definitely easier, especially the prelit ones (until the lights quit cooperating).

  28. I love love love your Oh Christmas Tree banner.

I love real trees but hate knowing ticks come in on them and that we're cutting down trees to keep inside for a month.

  29. i have never had a real tree! i don't even think i've seen/smelled one. interesting.
i suck at christmas cards. never send them.
The Holiday!!! LOVE that movie. The Santa Clause is my favourite. It's awful, I know, but I can't get enough.
girl YES on the hot chocolate. give me all of them with all the whipped cream. every day please and thank you.

  30. Your tree is beautiful! I grew up with a real tree but bought a fake one when I got my first apartment which I've been using for years. Last year was our first Christmas in our house and we got a real tree and I was so annoyed with all the needles everywhere and having to water it, etc. Back to a fake tree this year! :)

  31. The Holiday is one of my favorites, too - I would love to do a house swap to London for Christmas.

  32. Christmas morning breakfast sounds like a lovely tradition!

  33. I was opposite. We always cut down a real tree for Christmas when I was a kid and now that we have cats, we have to have a fake one. It definitely is easier, but I miss the scent! I get my kids matching Christmas pjs and a book to open on Christmas Eve. They get dressed and go read in bed. Haha!

  34. So my boyfriend insisted on getting a real tree because he wanted the pine scent. I suggested getting a fake pre-lit tree and just spraying pine scent on it and was instantly met with a scoff... so we got a real tree haha! I actually really love it though and while getting the lights on was work and cleaning up the pines when they fall off is annoying, I really do like the way it looks and the way it smells!
