Lately (June 2016)

carly blogs here; cbh; summer quotes; quotes about summer; frozen coffee
Wednesday, we meet again! The weeks are just flying by and even though this is only the first official week of summer, I'm sure it will be officially fall before we know it. I actually didn't get around to making a summer to-do or bucket list, but the theme of the summer is explore with intention. I'm a big homebody and a creature of habit, so I'm making a really big effort to explore new places and restaurants this summer while the weather is on our side.

I finally tried the Starbucks cold brew a couple of weeks ago and I enjoyed it, but I was a little shocked by the price. It was almost $3.50 for something that tasted way too similar to your regular drip coffee-- so I think I'll stick to trying to make a batch at home.

Normally I'd say I'm not a TV person, but I'm about to talk about a bunch of TV shows so maybe I shouldn't say that anymore? I caught all the way up to the current season of Pretty Little Liars just in time to watch season 7. I wasn't that into season 6, but maybe not being able to binge watch all of the episodes at once will make me more interested in this season. I also watched a little bit of the RHOC but I'm trying not to watch as much reality TV because I get exhausted watching people constantly being mean to each other.

We started watching Feed the Beast on AMC with David Schwimmer & Jim Sturgess... we're three episodes in and it's pretty boring. If there was nothing else on it would be something we'd watch, but with so many other options I doubt we'll keep up with it. I'm also really excited that Mr. Robot comes back next month.

I've been looking for some good exercise band workouts for when we're traveling this summer and won't have access to a gym or weights. Speaking of workout out one of my favorite exercises is a lunge with your back leg on a bosu ball for a bit of extra focus on your core when keeping your balance.

After using an Essie polish on my nails and having it chip like two seconds later (see photo above #awkwardhandpic), I went back to an old favorite- members only by L'Oreal and it's the perfect summer color and the formula is so good. It's thin but opaque so it's easy to apply and you only need two coats max.

Speaking of beauty products, I'm really tempted by this Sephora summer favorites kit. It's $40 but you get a full-size mascara ($32) and a full-size eyeliner ($22), plus four or five other deluxe size samples. While the mascara would definitely be used along with the other products, I'd never use the eyeliner and I'm trying to remind myself that it isn't a good deal if you don't need it.

I hope everyone is having a good week so far!

  1. i hate it when a great polish sucks. i had this one essie polish that, no matter how many top coats i applied, always chipped. i tossed it and started buying Orly.

  2. I have the worst luck with essie polishes but always go back to them LOL!! I watched the PLL episode yesterday and I have no clue what's going on so I need to start from the beginning lol! We've been watching Prison Break on Netflix - obsessed with it! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  5. So nail polish is probably one of my top 5 favorite beauty products. I love, love, love Essie colors, formula for application, bottle shape, etc. But yes, it chips like crazy. I just invested in their gel top coat, and honestly, it's a game-changer. My nails are perfect for almost a week and when they do start to get dinged up, it's because of wear and tear that you'd expect. My $.02!
I watched season 6 of PLL too and liked it, but I was not as OMG GIMME MORE as I was with the previous seasons. Eh. Is season 7 the last? I have to wait for it to come on Netflix anyway so I'll likely just forget about it for the next 9-12 months!

  6. I love the cold brew at Starbucks but agree it's insanely priced. I only get it once a week, it's my little treat. While I love the Essie colors, they never stay on my nails. I have oily nail beds so most polish chips right off me.

  7. Ahh I am the worst at remembering that if you don't need it it's not ACTUALLY a good deal!

  8. So glad that you're enjoying the summer so far! I taped the PLL premiere last night, so I'll be catching up on that this weekend. Love L'Oreal polish, too!

  10. I got my exercise bands off of Amazon - they have great ones. There's one with a workout chart with like 100 exercises & it all fits in a travel bag they send with it - & its like $24.99 for it all! Let me know if you want the link.

GIRLLLL - Do the cold brew at home - SO EASY!

  11. Chipping nail polish is the worst! I got the Essie gel topper which has made a huge difference in drying time and longevity. But I still swear by Sinful Colors which are only $2 at Target. And cold brew at home? Yes please! :-D

  13. That Sephora box does look super tempting!!! I have been wanting to try Fresh and a few of the other things in the box...and then there are some of my staples (UD setting spray). To be honest, Essie is not my favorite. There. I said it. I love their packaging and their colors but every last one of their polishes chips within a day for me. I have better luck with Sinful for $1.99. I like Sally Hansen, OPI, Julep, Butter and Lauren B the best.

  14. I'm a homebody by nature as well so I really have to challenge myself to see more and do more. I'm not that into cold brew...I could be...but I normally just crave hot coffee in the am.

  15. I'm always so tempted by the big Sephora packages too, but I signed up for their Play box, so I don't find myself drawn to them as much because I get samples every month. I didn't have a chance to watch PLL last night, but I did watch OC. For some reason I'm just drawn to all the drama of reality TV!

  16. $3.50 for cold brew at Starbucks?!?!? Count me WAY out!

  17. I also tried Starbucks sweet vanilla cold brew or whatever it's called (since Starbucks is on every corner and I use them for their bathrooms) and I wasn't really a fan of it. It wasn't any different from regular coffee, which I don't usually drink anyways. I only have one Essie nail polish and my problem with it is that I have to apply like 3 coats for it to look even. I'm not a big nail polish person and I don't think I'll be getting any more of them.

  18. Is Pretty Little Liars still on? I've never watched it. I'm big into Orange Is the New Black right now, but I might check it out one day. I've heard Mr. Robot is really good!

  19. I did that Sephora kit two years ago and used a smidge of the products but love & use the bag. I am considering this year's anyway. LOL

I love making cold brew at home. I do a spin on the Pioneer Woman's method.

Great idea on the bands. I think I'll go through your pins and take a band down to the shore.

  20. Bummer about your Essie polish! Did you use a good top coat? I think some of their colors last a bit better than others unfortunately.
I watched RHOC this week too. Sometimes the drama from reality tv is overwhelming....but then I can't tear myself away! haha

  21. Gah, that's the thing about Essie polishes - the while their color selection is generally fantastic, they chip so easily!

  22. I'm actually trying to do a band workout post soon! I need to get on it. And I agree with the cold brew. Not my fave.

  23. I have just given up completely on regular nail polish and do my own shellac nail polish at home. Oh and for exercises you should check out Sarah Bowmar...she does a lot of really great ideas for when you do and don't have access to a gym! Hope you had a good weekend!

  24. i am such a homebody too and never want to do anything lol. a lunge with a bosu thingy? sounds hard, i will have to try it! kc and i watched the first few episodes of mr robot (i think?) but never finished it, will have to fix that.

  25. I'm finally watching PLL in real time and it's driving me crazy! It just seems so unbelievable and so similar to the first "mystery." I might be over it? RHOC though, I'm so not over. I don't understand why I'm so fascinated by so many of the RH shows!

  26. Oh no how annoying that your Essie manicure chipped right away! I usually have pretty good luck with Essie because I use their gel top coat and the polish stays put for a solid week or so. Hope you had a great weekend!

  27. Ahh thanks for the cold brew post shout out! ;) It is kind of expensive to buy it! Making it is cheaper and pretty easy and you can have it whenever! Since we were gone last week, I get to watch both PLL episodes tonight and I am so excited!!

  28. I haven't tried any L'Oreal polish... I think I need to get on board.

I think it's so funny how everyone has a different polish preference. I LOVE Essie formula and they tend to stay for such a long time without chipping on my hands. I do use an Essie base coat and a gel top coat, but I love how it looks on me. However, I've started to venture into other brands and I'm surprised to see that some perform well and others don't. Recently I was really shocked by how well the Essence gel polish wore. Seriously. A week with no top coat - no chips!

  29. I tried cold brew coffee the other day from a good coffee shop here and I didn't like it. I don't know if it's because it was cold brew or just because it was from there. I need to try it from Starbucks. I'm in the middle of Season 6 of PLL and am recording Season 7 so that once I'm caught up, I can watch it. It's such a teenie bopper show but I really want to stinkin' know who A is. Haha!
