The Nail Polish Purge

After going through my makeup I decided it was time to go through my nail polish as well. I didn't paint my nails very often this summer-- other times I always have polish on my nails, but I've always justified my nail polish collection because I don't get my nails done at the salon. So I'm saving money, right? ;)

Prior to the organized photo above I had my nail polishes shoved into the container, some overflowed into candle jars, and quite a few are scattered around the house. I got rid of a few of my favorite polishes (Zoya's Paz-- the bright orange below) because it was so old and just didn't apply well anymore.
I tossed all of my glitter polishes because I never use them anymore, and a few of the other colors were similar to other polishes I have that I like a little bit better.

British Green Racing, Lady Muck, The Old Bill, La Moss, Wallis, All Hail the Queen.
I usually don't stray too far from cream finishes, but when it comes to fall and the holidays I love a good metallic polish and I think butter London has some of the best options. All Hail the Queen is my absolute favorite-- I love British Green Racing when the holidays roll around. Lady Muck is a frosty pale blue. The Old Bill is a metallic copper finish. La Moss is a deep burgundy-- the perfect color for fall! And Wallis is one people either love or hate-- a golden olive color.

Walk on the Beach, Safari Chic, Eiffel For You, Pistachio Dream, The Muse's Inspiration, Orange You Jealous?, Members Only, Drop Dead Gorgeous, (not pictured butterfly kisses
L'Oreal polishes are my favorite from the drugstore-- and some of my favorite just in general. Walk on the Beach is the only one I find to have a slightly streaky formula. Eiffel For You is a great dupe for Essie's Chinchilly. Members Only and Orange You Jealous? are perfect summer colors. Drop Dead Gorgeous is black with a bit of silver glitter.

I didn't take pictures of every polish, but I'm going to do another post soon with my favorite picks for fall! And in case you missed it...orange & coral polish favorites favorite blue & green polishes

How do you store your nail polish? Are you loyal to any brands?

  2. I need to do a serious nail polish purge. I'm sure some of mine have dried out since I last used them. Love all those pretty butter polishes! That olive one is perfect!

  4. You have so many nail polishes! I don't have a lot, probably less than 10 but that's because I don't ever paint my nails. Very rarely do I get the urge to paint my nails a fun color so I never end up buying nail polishes but out of the couple that I've tried I like OPI.

  5. I was just thinking yesterday I need to do this! I have some favorites I need to toss because they're so old. I keep them on the fridge in a bowl... Not the best way I guess! Can't wait for your fall picks!

  6. I have a Caboodle that I keep my polish in (Hello 80's flashback) & when it gets full, I have to purge.

  7. I really need to do a purge too. I have a lot of older Essie polishes that just don't apply the right way anymore.

  8. Good for you for purging! I think I need to do the same thing here pretty soon.

  9. I keep all of mine in one of those Sterilite/Rubbermaid drawer organizers. But it's a still a pain in the Asa bc you can't SEE them all. I'd love to have the space to be able to use shelving like they have at salons!

  10. Earlier this summer I did the same thing...I chose one container and was like: okay time for some tough choices...You all must fit in here or we start to purge. I purged.

  11. a few months ago, i got rid of ALL my nail polishes, except for one clear polish. I love to paint my nails, but they always chip and peel and I was so sick of it. I only really paint them for special occasions now, so I can buy one or get them done for that but I figured if I wasn't painting them for normal every day, i shouldn't hold on to them. good for you for purging though! if i tried to purge my mascara collection it would be a bit like this lol, they are all over the house and overflowing all of their containers. i have a problem ;)

  12. I need to do a purge. After a while, even some of my favorite colors just get thick and too funky to actually use. You have some gorgeous colors!

  13. I need to do this as well. I think I have polishes that are probably 15 years old, eek!
You have a good collection Carly!

  14. I did a nail polish purge awhile back too. So many I just didn't use anymore. I love the Eiffel for You color. L'Oreal and Sinful Colors are my go to brands.

  15. Sooo I have a bunch of L'Oreal polishes I love, but the bottle design is way different... I think that proves how old they are and how I need to get new ones ;) I actually store my polish in the top drawer of my vanity. They all lay sideways, so that's probably not ideal, but I make sure the caps are on tight, so no spills yet! Can't wait to see your picks for fall.

  16. Oh gosh, I store all of my nail polish dumped into a Sephora bag in the hall closet. It's not pretty or convenient so I really need to do something like this! I've never tried a L'Oreal polish before but can't wait to check them out now!

  17. I only use one brand of nail polish - the Sally Hansen Salon brand. It is free of some of the bad chemicals and I love the brush. I made a promise to myself this year to mark each color that I use and throw any away that didn't get used, I didn't love or seemed old. The other rule was to NOT buy any new ones until I had gone through all of them. So far, so good :)

  18. I need more nail polishes! I just cut off manicures and pedicures from my budget :'( so now I'm going to be doing them myself. I am always on the lookout for good nailpolish colors.

  19. I did a purge recently too! I let my friend have a whole bunch of them. I kept all of my Essie polishes though!

  20. You have a ton of nail polishes. I don't own enough to do a purge! The butter colors are all so pretty!

  21. I really want to try the butter polishes; I hear amazing things! And I love the L'Oreal polishes, too! I find that all my drugstore polishes last 2X as long with the Sally Hansen miracle gel top coat!

  24. Dang girl, that's a lot of polish!! I don't have nearly this much, but luckily steal from my roommate's stash pretty frequently :)

  25. At the beginning of the year (week of January 1) I embarked on a use every nail polish once before reusing campaign...I'm still using new ones. So that tells you how many bottles I have. Through the course of this exercise, I've gotten rid of a lot! And have some more that will probably go too in lieu of me using them.

    I store mine in boxes!

  26. This was a great reminder to me to do nail polish purge myself! LOVE the way your nail polishes look in the bin - so organized and pretty!

  27. I was storing my polishes in my night stand, but I moved them to my makeup drawers last month. I typically stick with Essie polish because that's just what works for me. I did a big polish purge about a year ago. But, I'm not one to buy lots and lots of polish (I have no idea why).

  30. I'm currently in the process of purging my junk makeup in favor of a few "high end" bits and bobs. And surprisingly, I went through my polish collection when we moved and got rid of 100 of them. I still have well over 200 though, so that's a problem. I am finding that I'm just not into nail art anymore--so it's probably time for another purge where I get rid of the polishes I really only hold on to for nail art purposes.

  31. I'm pretty loyal to Essie, but I have a few stragglers from other brands too. Mostly gifts; I pretty much only buy Essie. It's a sickness. I store mine in rows by color in this decorative box because that's also a sickness. But I love nail polish and this reminds me that I desperately need to make some time to give myself a mani before the weekend!

  32. I did a big purge last year of my nail polishes, but I think I could probably get rid of even more now. I love all the bright colours I used to wear but I feel a bit off about wearing them to the office so they just sit at home - so sad! I'm kind of looking forward to busting out the fall colours because they're mostly neutrals so totally office appropriate!
