Finally Finding My Favorite Foundation

After searching for five months and trying eight different foundation I've finally found the perfect match for my skin type! I've used two other Smashbox foundations in the past so I really have no idea why it took me so long to try one again because it was love at first use.

Before I get into this foundation, and in case you're curious, these are the other foundations I tried:

1. Tarte Amazonian Clay
2. Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation
3. Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation
4. Clarins Everlasting Foundation
5. L'Oreal True Match Lumi Foundation
6. L'Oreal True Match Foundation
7. MUFE Invisible Cover HD Foundation

All of these are great foundations-- they just didn't work for me. As you can probably tell from the photo below the biggest problem I had was finding the right color. I had a hard time finding a shade that was light enough but still warm or yellow enough. I could go on forever about each of these foundations, but this would be the longest post ever so I won't. If you have any specific questions let me know.

top left: L'Oreal Lumi W 1-2 | top right: L'Oreal Lumi N3 | bottom right: L'Oreal True Match W3 | bottom left: MUFE 123
really like L'Oreal True Match and I use that one every once in a while. It looks perfect in the bottle but on my face it applies really pink, so it just doesn't match my complexion very well. I think I'll eventually try another shade or possibly do some mixing because it has a really nice finish and gives good coverage.

After a lot of trial and error I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for-- something that would be long lasting, provide medium coverage, and have strong warm undertones.

First of all-- the color is perfect, at first it looked a little orange when I swatched it on my hand, but on my face it applies beautifully and is the perfect coloring for me. It's transfer-proof, so it dries quickly and sets well on the skin in what I would consider a velvet-like finish.

It sounds crazy but somehow it seems to look better as the day goes on. Usually by the end of the night I can't wait to take off my makeup because it's looking a bit worn, but this still looks basically perfect after having it on my skin all day-- without a powder or setting spray!

I have really imperfect skin-- acne, scarring, redness, dry spots, and other areas of texture. While this doesn't completely hide all of that it easily makes my skin look 10x better. It really looks like my skin but better without being cakey or heavy.

My chin area is very dry most of the time and it's the only area where I get a little bit of product flaking from the dry skin.

These two foundations could not be more different, but I wanted to compare them to show the color. On the left is the Studio Skin Foundation in 2.2 and on the right is L'Oreal Lumi in N3. As far as the depth of color I'd say they're pretty similar-- N3 has a bit more pink to it.

Do you struggle to find the perfect foundation? What's your current favorite?

  1. I have such a hard time finding foundations too. Nothing ever matches my skintone or it leaves me feeling greasy. Lately Ive been using Bare Minerals but I want to switch it up. I love Smashbox products!

  2. woo hoo for finding your foundation!! I'm actually not very loyal to foundation, but I've been using urban decay naked foundation and I love it - i've used make up forever as well and really liked that! Next up will be smash box now! :) xo, Biana - BlovedBoston

  3. Ooh I loved this review! I've heard great things about Smashbox but never tried one of their products myself. So great you found a great foundation match - I know how tricky it can be. I especially struggle as I have warm/yellow undertones too so almost everything is waaaay to pink on me. All that changed though when I discovered MAC Face and Body Foundation over 2 years ago. It's perfect for me!

  4. I've had a hard time finding the right foundation too. My most recent favorite has been the CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1. It provides a decent coverage (I could use a little more) but I like that matte finish with my oily skin. Glad you finally found one you like!

  5. What a fantastic review! I think I tried this foundation back in the day when it first came out, but it just didn't work for my skin since I like more of a full-coverage look. Smashbox makes such great products, though, so I'm glad that you finally found something that works for you!

  7. You feel my pain... I can't find one I like either. My face breaks out like I'm 15 yrs old when I try foundations... I want to try Bare Minerals... but now you have me wanting to check this out.

  8. Finding the right foundation is so hard! I *think* I finally found mine a couple months ago...the color is starting to look just a tad orange to me (I have olive undertones so I'm always paranoid I'm going to look too tan) but I really like the formula so I might just have to try a different shade and/or do some mixing. My skin is a lot like yours and it's so hard finding something that will do everything I need it to!

  11. It's really exciting that you found foundation that you enjoy! I usually stay away from heavy coverage, so my go to product right now is my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, it's pretty nice for the winter because it doesn't dry out my skin.

  12. Yay for finding the right foundation for you! Smashbox was the first liquid foundation I ever used and I LOVED it! I'm too lazy right now so I usually stick with my Bare Minerals but I do want to try Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer this summer!

  13. Foundation is always hard for me. I like full coverage, but obviously not cakey... and I am VERY light.

I'm glad you finally found your holy grail! I'm still loving my air brush foundation, but for every day I'm using Laura Geller Balance and Brighten--crazy because I'm also dry and I have always hated powder foundations... Love this one, though!

  14. I have the same trouble with finding foundations that aren't just the right COLOR but also the right undertone. I have an olivey/yellow undertone vs. pink--and so many foundations run pink!!

  15. I tend to have issues, since my tan fades throughout the year, but I am still naturally tan. So weird for finding a color to match. I like the True Match but lately have been using the Almay Smart Shade and that has been working well.

  18. Foundation intimidates me so much, so I've never really tried a 'real' one. I've used tinted mousturisers I loved. i might look into the loreal one - they are just so intimidating because i have no clue what colour to get! right now i am using rimmel matte something or other - i guess it's technically a foundation but its a little tube thingy so it doesn't seem 'real' like the ones you use lol. Its hard to find a light one with enough coverage that doesn't look like a cake. Congrats on finding the one for you! :)

  20. I don't really use foundation, I use a CC cream (Perfekt, Smashbox, or Revlon). When I do buy face stuff, I tend to go to Sephora and have them match it because I'm terrible at doing that.

  21. Great review! I think I still like the bareskin more than the Complexion Recovery I'm trying. This may have to go in the rotation next.

  22. For me shopping for foundation is like shopping for jeans - I just hate it! It always takes so much trial and error to find something that is the right colour, coverage, and finish that also doesn't break me out. I'm so hesitant to try new face products out once I've found something that works for me - but my usual foundations have been picking up a lot of dry patches recently so I need to start that journey! I'm glad you finally found something that works for you!

  23. I still struggle to find the perfect foundation. I've been using the Physician's Formula Youthful Wear foundation. Unlike a lot of people, I usually only buy new foundation after finishing whatever one I currently have. Thus, my quest is extremely slow and painful.

  24. .I have been on the hunt for the perfect foundation too! I'm on my 4th or 5th bottle/brand and so far my favorite is a combo of two brands/colors, lol. I'll add this brand to my list if I can find it in my color!

  25. Oh, that bitter struggle to find the foundation that suits you in color, tone, texture, finish, and feel.. I know it well! I've given up on ever getting what I really want from a foundation and just switched to BB cream and decided I don't ever need to look flawless, hah. But I'm glad you find your HG :)

  37. I need to try this! It's amazing that you've tried that many foundations! I've only tried about three different ones in my lifetime, but I really want to try out a few different ones because I like the one I use now but don't love it. I've never tried anything from Smashbox!

  38. My face shade changes with the seasons so it's so complex to keep it matched. I really just started getting into makeup so I'm still experimenting to find the one that matches but I am now using a great one from Avon.
Before that, I had a Cover a Girl whipped cream that matched me so well and then I couldn't seem to find the color anymore.
