The One With the Chocolate Cake

We went out to dinner with a group of friends for my good friend's birthday this weekend and I experienced something so weird it deserves a blog entry.

We were at The Hamilton and had ordered dessert after our dinner, the chocolate gooey cake... it took a long time to come out, but it wasn't a big deal since we were all chatting anyway.

Our dessert finally arrived and the waiter gave us a brownie-- when we told him it was the wrong thing he said: "this is the new chocolate gooey cake" and walked away.

I think it's safe to say most people know the difference between a cake and a brownie...not to mention two other people had ordered the cake, so we clearly knew it wasn't the right thing.

One of the managers apologized and eventually brought us the real cake, but it was so crazy to me that our waiter never said anything about his blatant lie. In the food service industry, how can you bring someone something and tell them its something else not knowing if they have any allergies?

I was a little bit shocked that the manager wasn't more apologetic or concerned about it. I could be wrong, but isn't it a little bit insulting if someone tries to tell you that a brownie is the same thing as a piece of cake?

Have you ever experienced anything like this before? Would you have been as bothered by it as I was?

And when our bill came, we were charged for the brownie. Go figure.

  1. That is insane! I've never had anything like that happen to me. I don't even know what I would do; I'd probably be too stunned to argue. And I feel like at a place like The Hamilton they really should know better.

  4. Wow that's pretty sada ctually... I can't believe the waiter was that rude. It's nice that the manager finally brought the right desert but you guys definitely should have gotten that comped!

  5. Whoa.

A couple of weeks ago, we were at a restaurant (a fairly nice one) and I found a TRIDENT wrapper in my meal. Luckily, they took care of the whole thing and were very apologetic. Comped my meal.

The restaurant definitely should have been more apologetic to you and shouldn't have made you pay for the brownie (IMO).

  8. That is so odd! I love a good brownie but I LOVE chocolate cake and would have been like…what is this?! It's surprising that the waiter didn't own up to it at all and that the manager didn't make a bigger deal out of it. I'm always put off when I get less than stellar customer service, just because I think a little bit goes a long way.

  9. Um yeah, that is insane and I would have been so annoyed. Things like that, and the attitude and disregard, make me stop giving my business to those places for sure.

  12. That is so crazy but it seems sometimes you just can't get what you ask for. Lazy waiter should be fired and I would have done the same thing.

  15. That is terrible! The waiter was clearly lying. I would never go back to a place like that. Even the manager! I'd maybe even write a bad Yelp review, haha!

  20. This sort of thing annoys me so freaking much. I worked in food services for a long, long time. Mistakes happen. I don't think there's a single customer on the planet who doesn't expect a mistake here and there--right? I mean, we're human beings working under immense pressure and time restraints. So he put down brownie by accident. Admit the mistake, laugh about it and bring out the cake. WTF. I would have been super insulted if I were y'all and would have made it a big deal to the manager.

  21. Oh my gosh thats crazy!! I do feel like sometimes when my sister and I eat out, (we don't look our real age) we don't get great service because the waiter just assumes we are kids and won't tip well.
This is terrible - I am glad the manager apologized!

  23. I too think customer service is crucial, even over small matters, because here's the thing: my company is small but we do a HUGE volume of business, and we have pretty much just one person running customer service... and we do it superbly. Good customer service is possible, and to not provide it is just rude to a person who's paying for it. I don't blame you for speaking up!

  24. Wow, never had something like that happen before! It's one thing if the waiter acts that way, but for the manager to not apologize or seem to care very much- rude!!

  26. Wow!!! Why are people so rude and lazy?! That's just not right! I would have told them I wasn't paying for the brownie after I was lied to by the waiter and had to wait such a long time! Ugh! Costumer service people! I hope you gave him a bad tip haha!

  28. Thats so rude! And I can't believe the waiter tried to lie about the brownie being a cake, you can't possibly get the two mixed up. The worst part is that after all that they made you pay for it! Sounds like a terrible place!

  29. That is so weird. How do you mistake a brownie with a cake! Rude!

  30. How incredibly strange! My question is...why did they try to sell you a brownie instead of the cake? Do you think he was just too lazy to go back to the kitchen and get the right dessert?

Weird... I hope the rest of the meal was nice!
