The Post Where I Talk Too Much About Eye Shadow

If anyone knew the amount of time I spent googling eye shadow swatches yesterday they would definitely judge me. I haven’t been wearing eye shadow very often, but earlier this week I went really crazy (sarcasm) and used two shades: naked lunch & satin taupe. Two of my favorite shades…however, for some weird reason they were showing up REALLY silver on me and I didn’t like it-- which is weird because I typically love both shades.

See how pretty they are?

I’ve wanted a new eye shadow palette for a while now, so this realization led me to search for a warm palette that included some gold shades. I also knew I wanted a good mix of matte and shimmer shades.

I actually really wanted the MAC 15 warm shades palette, but I didn’t want to spend $100 on eye shadow even though it really is quite a good deal when you think about it…

The Naked palettes are an obvious contender as well—every time I see bloggers post looks using some of the shades I really love how they come together. For some reason anytime I swatch the shades myself I’m never so sure about them. I think that’s the one danger of looking at products on someone else—colors can look completely different depending on your skin tone!

The Tarte Rainforest After Dark palette has been on my lust list since I first saw it—the colors look really gorgeous and I love that it includes a blush. I decided I wanted to stick with a more traditional eye shadow palette for now so I skipped over this one for now.

I’ve also had my eye on a few different LORAC palettes, and after doing some investigating I settled on the LORAC Pro being my first choice—though the Unzipped palette was a close second—it’s just so pretty!

That’s a lot of eye shadow talk just to say I’m between the LORAC Pro palette and the Too Faced Natural Eye Shadow palette.

The TF palette is $36 and includes 9 shades. I have a couple of TF shadows that I really like in a small palette I got with a value set a while back; Steph always raves about one of their other palettes—so combined with what I’ve seen of the colors I think it’s a great option for me- especially considering the price!

The LORAC Pro comes in at $42 and includes 16 shades plus an eye shadow primer. This definitely has the better matte to shimmer ratio of the shadows and I love that it includes a matte black.

Do you own either of these palettes? Or can you convince me I should get a different one? What are your favorite warm shadows?

  1. Ok. I am not big on makeup and I'm not very good with it. I have the Naked 3 and while I probably don't use it as well as other people, I love it. I want the Naked 2 or maybe the first one. I also have a too faced palette, but not the one you have pictured, and I couldn't find it on ulta, and I have had it since 2010 (yeah i dont wear a lot of makeup) and I love love LOVE it. I use it alllll the time. Lastly (phew!) one of my best friends has the Lorac palette and loves it and has convinced me to get it, but I have a hard time spending that much money on eyeshadow even though I know I'll use it for years, but I will absolutely eventually be getting it. Hope this helps lol

  2. 100% you should go with the Lorac Pro Palette. There are 8 matte shades and 8 shimmer shades, so you have a great variety of shadows for an endless number of eye looks. The pigmentation of these shadows is unbelievable, and they last ALL day. That's coming from someone who has oily eyelids and used this palette on her wedding day - you won't be disappointed!

  3. I LOVE eyeshadow!!! You can't go wrong with either one... But I link I like the Lorac shades a little better and the colors give you more options for a smoky eye.

  4. I think it really depends on what you like on you, what you like to wear. For example, I love the LORAC PRO palate and have always love LORAC but I didn't get this one. Instead I got the NAKED 3 because I do better with neutrals with a little blush in them. Totally helpful, I know ;)

  5. Oh man... I don't own either, BUT the LORAC pro has been on my lust list for a lonnnnng time. And, I think it's actually a really good deal. I recently bought the Lorac Pro to Go for traveling and I am IN LOVE with the quality of the shadows.

  8. I could spend hours looking up swatches on eyeshadow online lol - I have the UD Naked palettes, but I know what you mean, they do tend to look slightly different on everyone. I LOVEEE Lorac shadows, they are such high quality and great colors. I always end up going back to them. I have recently found love for Bare Minerals loose shadows too (the ones that come in the little jars) - check out Nude Beach, Celestine, Queen Phyllis :)

  9. Satin Taupe is one of my go-to daily shades...I'm such a MAC addict! I haven't tried Naked Lunch before but I've been looking for a more silvery shadow so that may do the trick.

  10. I'm not a very adventurous eyeshadow person, so I don't have too many that I use. My all time favourite MAC eyeshadow is All That Glitters, I absolutely love that stuff and the colour is so beautiful. I think it looks flattering on everyone! The only pallet I have is the Naked Basics, so pretty basic, earthy tones that are great for a natural look.

  12. Satin Taupe is my all time fave Mac shadow, I used it this morning :) Ok, I don't have the Too Faced one but I can't say enough good about the Lorac one, you know I absolutely love it.

  13. So I have all three of the Naked Palettes and love the second one the most!! I really want to try the Lorac palette- that would probably be my biggest contender right now! I also have the Chocolate Bar from Too Faced which not only smells heavenly but has really pretty colors!!

  15. I own the Lorac Pro Palette and know a ton of people love it, but I was not really impressed! I seriously haven't even touched my Lorac palette since I got my Naked 2! I just thought the shadows weren't that pigmented and didn't last near as long as others I've tried. But again, sooo many people love it so maybe I'm just the weird one!

  16. I wear the same 2 colors all the time. Today I changed it up a bit and wore 2 different colors. It was exciting (sarcasm). I've just never had the skill to do pretty eye shadow. I like those palettes though!

  19. OK so, just my input here but I have the new Too Faced Natural Eyes palette and it's not really my favorite. I have lots of other neutral palettes that are similar (UD Naked Original is one I reach for more often), so that might be the only reason? I think the LORAC Pro Palette is sooo pretty and I would totally get that if I didn't have so many similar shades in my collection. :)

PS. Naked Lunch is my FAVE.
And you're not alone, I love eyeshadow talk. :D

  20. I love the Lorac Palette. I caved in and bought the second one, as well. I don't know which I like better. Have you played with the It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty palette? That's a good one, too.

  22. As someone who has the Naked 3 - I can vouch for it. The shades are so gorgeous and perfect for warm-toned gals :)
I also super love the Lorac palette. The shades would look lovely on you!

  23. The colors may look silver on your hand because your hands are most likely didn't shades/colors than your face. I read that somewhere lol and to not depend soley on the swatch on your hand when purchasing. I have the naked 1 and you would love it! Very nice, warm tones. The 2 was not right for my coloring. I just bough the Loarc Pro and love it already! If you look up Clair Marshall on Youtube, she loves the Lorac pro and does amazing work with it. Also, I hear that the Smashbox exposed (I think is the name) is a great one as well with lots of matte colors (clair raves about this one as well haha)

  24. In case I have not already left a comment, this is just a quick note to say hi. I visited your blog during the month of August and I liked what I saw, so I've added you to my feedreader and am following your blog. :)

I like the TF one myself. But I also really love the Tarte one. :)

    Cheers!

  26. Lorac is great! I do love the palettes from Coastal scents too, really inexpensive and highly pigmented. The also sell empty palettes that you can add color tins too, similar to the Mac build a palette.

  27. Great eyeshadow swatches girl! ;-) Have you seen the new Naked-esque palette Maybelline just came out with? I'm very intrigued I wanted to do a side by side comparison!

  28. I really want that Tarte palette, the swatches and looks I've seen with it are gorgeous! If I can convince myself I need any more eyeshadow it is definitely between that one and the new Naked2 Basics - it has some really nice cool toned matte colours and I am such a sucker for that!
