5 on Friday (the last of June)

I thought I'd end the week with one last bit of red, white, and blue for this 5 on Friday. This is a bittersweet Friday as it's already the last Friday in June...how is that possible? I'm linking up with Lauren Elizabeth & Amanda to share a few things from this week (& last week).

1. I made these cupcakes and they didn't turn out as perfect as I had hoped but they were delicious. Yellow buttercream cake + buttercream frosting + berries = delicious! And if anyone has any secrets for how to get all of your cupcakes to come out the same size please let me know!

2. Nothing says the first day of summer like a little BBQ! Saturday we went to the BBQ Battle and had such a good time. We went early so we didn't see any of the actual BBQing being done for the contests, but we had so much good free bbq. We also ran into Johnny Trigg from BBQ Pitmasters, so that was exciting for us, since we've seen the show so many times!

3. I managed to pull off this double-braid-- I'll probably never be able to get it to look like that again, but I realized it's easier to just try and do my own thing, than focus too much on watching tutorials.

4. Last weekend we had brunch at a new spot on U Street: Vinoteca-- they have the perfect outdoor space. A patio in the front and a back area with a bar, a few tables, and even a place to play bocce. The food was just average, but it was pretty inexpensive by DC standards, so you really can't complain. We'll definitely be back again soon!

5. That same day we had a quick stop at the zoo and got to see Bao Bao outside!

  8. Uhm..those cupcakes look freaking delicious. Also totally impressed by your double braid!! I'm the same as you--I like watching tutorials to get an general idea and then I just run with it however it works for me. I'm dying for a sunday morning brunch out on a patio. Those are...well, nonexistent here in the middle of nowhere--but maybe someday I'll end up in DC and then we'll have to like, hang out, k?

  9. Those cupcakes look delicious! Try using an ice cream scoop or cookie dough scoop to put the same amount of batter in each cup. And, your hair?! OMG. You need to do a tutorial on how to get that double braid - it looks gorgeous. Have a great weekend!

  10. Your double braid looks so good!! Did it take you forever to do it? I'd screw it up for sure. But, in my defense, my hair is layered so it's impossible for me to pull of braids.

Your cupcakes look fantastic even if they're not all the same size.

    Mmm... free bbq.

  16. I really miss having the space for a BBQ plus our apartment doesn't like you having them, hopefully after we move into our first house we can crank up the BBQ and enjoy eating outside! It's always humorous the various sizes and shapes my cupcakes always come out after baking!

  19. OOOO those cupcakes look good! If you use a cookie scoop or ice cream scoop you can get a more even size.
And that braid! I am the worst at doing hair, but really need to start learning so I can do my daughter's hair.

    Have a great weekend!

  24. Your cupcakes look delicious and I love your braid!! One of my goals this summer is to get better at braiding my hair -- I'm terrible haha. Maybe I should just teach Nick so he can do it for me! Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

  25. Stopping by a little late from H54F! I agree with you on the hair tutorials, I think they are great for looking at and getting ideas, but I generally end up disappointed or end up changing something anyways.

We love days at the zoo here, too. I'm hoping we will get there soon!
